Desal plant petition lodged

A petition to reconsider building a desalination plant at Billy Lights Point was lodged in State Parliament recently, encompassing 1,788 signatures.

Member for Flinders Peter Treloar, who presented the petition, said the number of signatures reflected the local community interest surrounding the major project.

The petition, organised by the Hands off Boston Bay group, requests the government reconsider the proposal from SA Water to construct a desalination plant at Billy Lights Point, Port Lincoln, and identify an alternative site with greater current flows and exchange.

“While it is generally accepted that the region would benefit from a desalination plant, it is the proposed location that has caused some angst among the community, particularly the seafood industry,” Mr Treloar said.

As it currently stands, the proposed desalination plant has been put on hold for 12 months, allowing the Marshall Liberal Government and SA Water to undertake further investigation. This will include additional scientific investigations and more community consultation.

“Water security on the Eyre Peninsula is something I have been working towards over 12 years, and I am committed to ensuring this project is delivered for the benefit and long term sustainability of the region as a whole.”
