Eyre Peninsula schools requiring urgent upgrades have missed out on crucial State Budget funding, whilst brand new ‘super schools’ are being opened in Adelaide.
The State Budget included capital works investments for only a handful of schools, including the Cleve Area School, yet there are many other schools in Flinders crying out for funding, Liberal Member for Flinders Peter Treloar said today.
During the Budget Estimates process, the Liberal Member for Flinders Peter Treloar questioned the process for schools lodging capital works submissions, given that a great number of schools missed out on funding.
“The answer given by the Education Minister was dismissive and implied that the decision was more about politics than education.
“Questions remain over the proper submission process for schools seeking capital works funding from the State Government.
“Back in December of last year I highlighted the poor condition of buildings and classrooms at the Port Lincoln High School as just one example of a school needing upgrades.
“The Education Minister, and Premier-in-waiting, Jay Weatherill has since visited Port Lincoln High and other schools in Flinders, and yet nothing has been done to address these funding shortfalls.
“Clearly his designs on the Premier’s job have distracted him from his job of being Education Minister.”
