A petition to open the Tod Reservoir to recreational fishing was lodged in State Parliament recently, encompassing 366 signatures.
Member for Flinders Peter Treloar, who presented the petition, said there was interest shown by local recreational fishers to utilise the reservoir, which has been offline for the past few years.
The petition, which seeks to reopen the reservoir to the public, is also aimed at restocking native fish species suitable to the area.
Local business, tourism and councils are set to benefit from the initiative, which could create a unique and sustainable platform of freshwater fishing here on the Eyre Peninsula.
It would also take the pressure off fish stocks in the sea, and provide an outlet ideal for fishing all year round.
Opening the reservoir would fall in line with the Marshall Liberal Government’s plans to open various reservoirs across the State for the people to enjoy.
The Tod Reservoir was taken off-line in 2002 due to high levels of salinity, and has not contributed to Eyre Peninsula’s water supply since then.
